La Chica Boom in Funkterra
La Chica Boom Invades Funkterra / Free Your Mind And Your Nalgas Will Follow is a comedic depiction of the U.S./MX border in an alternate reality called Funkterra. La Chica Boom is a fronteriza (person from the U.S./MX Border) that sees visions where the border military is destabilized and the native elote is delicious. Burning tires, a symbol of revolt and upheaval, are falling from up above: There's a riot in the sky and an uprising taking root in the horizon. And from the ashes come growth. A new generation, raíz de maíz grows from the yonke (junk) tires. La Chica Boom's talk bubble is left as a blank space for you to fill with your imagination of what the future holds. When thinking about the idea of Amexicano I think the border is a critical space to look at because it was with the establishment of the arbitrary national border that a new generation of transnational fronteriz@s were born on both sides of the wall. Fronteriz@s navigate American and Mexican spaces, they ride the cultural line and occupy the space between.
Xandra Ibarra is an Oakland-based performance artist from the El Paso/Juarez border who performs and works under the alias of La Chica Boom. Her work deals with sexualization and racialization. Xandra a good friend, provided the reference photo and inspiration for this work.
