Books, books and more books! - Fall 2018 Newsletter
Here are some projects I’ve worked on in 2018. This can also be found on my newsletter.
The big project I worked on this year is my first children's book: My Papi Has A Motorcycle. I just finished illustrating this picture book written by author Isabel Quintero for Kokila, a Penguin Books imprint. The story is about a young girl taking a ride around her beautiful neighborhood on the back of her father's bright blue motorcycle. Isabel wrote a heart-felt story about love, change and things that stay the same. It was so fun building this world and characters to illustrate her story. Visually the book is colorful and finds a balance between picture book and comic. My Papi Has a Motorcycle is scheduled for a Summer 2019 release and will be available in both English and Español. The Believer Magazine is a five-time National Magazine Award finalist, is a bimonthly literature, arts, and culture magazine based at the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada. I was so excited to work with this publication because I've long been a fan of the great content they produce. I was a little nervouse about this one because previous cover artist include Charles Burns, Jillian Tamaki and so many more!
Tales From La Vida is a Latinx Comics Anthology edited and compiled by Dr. Frederick Aldama and published by Ohio State Press in Columbus, OH. It is so excited to be in the company of so many amazing comics storytellers. I have a one-page original comic strip in this anthology titled A Nomad's Heart. This book is available now. Bloody Seoul is a YA novel written by Sonia Patel and published by Cinco Puntos Press.in El Paso, TX. This is the third cover I've illustrated for Sonia and this one was really fun and exciting. The story is a wild and exciting ride through the streets of Seoul.
They Call Me Güero is a YA novel written by David Bowles and published by Cinco Puntos Press. This is my first time working with David and I'm exciting about this book because we both grew up in El Paso. David's book touches on a lot the special things that come with growing up in the desert.
The Beauty That Reamins is a YA novel written by Ashley Woodfolk and published by Random House Publishing in New York. This was a really exciting re-packaging project that I created an illustration for. This book is beautifully written from the perspective of three young people. Regina Flath was my Art Director on this project and it was great collaborating with her on the design. Regina made a really great hand-drawn typeface for this one. This book is scheduled for a March 12, 2019 release.
Look At My Soul is a collection of Tejano soul produced by my friend Adrian Quesada and put out by Nacional Records. This project includes some of the legends of Tejas music and it was an honor to work on this. The music in this collection is perfect for the Sunday cruise. Shout out to Federico Archuleta for putting my name out there for this one. Stream this album for FREE on Amazon Music.
